USS Independence
Captain's Ready Room
1456 hours
Zack leaned back slightly in his chair, casting a brief glance at his now lukewarm caffe macchiato. He had been on the comm with Starfleet Command for the better part of an hour, protesting their decision to yank his Executive Officer away at the last minute for a classified assignment. After going through the direct chain of command, Zack had finally managed to get in touch with Admiral Alynna Nechayev, the person that had issued Commander Thomas's transfer orders.
"Admiral," began Zack, trying not to sound whiney but largely failing, "with all due respect, the Independence is due to ship out the day after tomorrow for the Hopi Expanse. I specifically selected her for this position because she was the best available candidate. I don't think we can afford a personnel shake-up like this, Sir."
"I understand where you're coming from Captain," responded Nechayev after lifting a demitasse cup to her lips and taking a small sip of steaming black coffee. "But Commander Thomas's unique skill set will be vital to this Intelligence assignment. My orders stand."
"May I inquire as to what the assignment will be, and how long it will take? When should I expect my XO back?"
"I can't answer those questions Captain...unless your Security Clearance has suddenly been upgraded to Sigma-Nine. And according to my screen, you're Sigma-Five."
"I understand Sir," said Zack after a momentary pause and a heavy sigh. "What about my mission? It's against regs to proceed on a mission without somebody to fill in, even in an interim capacity. Do I just fend for myself?"
"Your mission is still important to us, Captain. As soon as I issued the transfer orders, I also arranged for a replacement. TamyoH is currently Chief of Security on the Dauntless, but she is well qualified for a command level position. A Klingon Defence Force exchange officer. She should be arriving before the evening's ceremony."
"I take it this will be her first position of that nature, Sir?"
"Yes. I don't think you'll find a more loyal Officer...once you've proven in her eyes that you're worthy of the Center Seat."
"I'll see what I can do. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with me, Sir."
"No problem, Captain Gillibrand. Starfleet Command out."
The screen went blank for a split second, then filled with the seal of the United Federation of Planets. This was certainly a change, and a most unexpected one at that. Zack had not personally interacted with many Klingons in his career, but he did respect their adherence to principles of honor and loyalty. Serving with tamyoH was going to turn out to be interesting.
"Computer," said Zack. "Show me the personnel of tamyoH, Starfleet rank Lieutenant Commander. Display search results on screen."
