USS Independence
Captain's Ready Room
2105 hours
Zack sat down at the chair of his desk...actually, more like flopped into the chair really. His head felt like a photon grenade had gone off between his ears, and he still had a jagged cut on his forehead that needed to be mended with a dermal regenerator if he wanted to avoid scarring. All in all, the Independence had been pretty lucky in the battle with the Cardassian fleet; they had suffered relatively minor damage that could be repaired easily before their scheduled departure for Sector 575 tomorrow morning. Feeling the need for a soothing drink, Zack ordered a cup of sweetened Rigellian Herbal Tea from the replicator unit. Just the thought of the tea calmed his nerves somewhat. Zack set down the saucer and teacup next to his computer and began to examine damage reports and repair estimates.
"Computer," he said as he picked up the cup of tea, "load status updates and begin systemic triage. Calculate repair estimates for all primary and secondary systems."
Working, said the Computer. Zack took a long sip from his tea, and instantly felt better. The unique blend of calming botanicals always set him at ease. While the computer was working, Zack took a moment to reflect upon his incident with Captain Woodcroft just a short while ago. Perhaps he had been too harsh with the younger woman...and perhaps just maybe he was a little jealous of her, She was a new Commanding Officer after all, and she had been given the very important position of Task Force Executive Officer; Zack had several years of command seniority over her, so in his mind of minds that position should have been rightfully his. He seldom questioned the choices of superior officers, though, and this time was no different. Zack would make an effort to issue a personal apology to Captain Woodcroft before they departed tomorrow. Status updates complete, said the Computer.
"Display results," said Zack. Primary systems diagnostics filled the screen; Zack was very pleased to see that the worst damage that the ship's major systems had suffered was burned out relays and isolinear chips. Some of the secondary systems had taken a bit more damage--such as Holodeck One, which would be out of commission for several days while a significant fraction of the OHD's were replaced. He was also concerned that the Cardassian device had been able to hack their power grid so easily, so he made a mental note to have Operations and Engineering begin writing code for stronger firewalls in all of the primary and secondary systems. The final analysis of shipboard systems was compiled into a report, and Zack viewed this report before sending.
Satisfied that everything was in order with his report, Zack transmitted it to Admiral Malloway. He then finished his cup of tea quickly and headed out of his Ready Room to give the repair crews--and his handsome young Chief Engineer--some encouragement.
